UIBE delegation attends int'l seminar in Japan

The International Seminar and Academic Exchange on "China, Japan and the Asian Economy in Great Changes" was held at Nagoya University, Japan from October 28 to November 1, 2015. Since UIBE has developed a multitude of theories and conducted fruitful research on such areas as international trade and low-carbon economy, and continues to keep up with current developments, Nagoya University and IDE-JETRO jointly invited UIBE to attend the seminar. In order to further cooperate with Nagoya University, increase academic exchanges, and establish a mutual-visit program, UIBE sent a delegation to the seminar, led by Hong Junjie, Dean of the School of International Trade and Economics (SITE), Ge Ying, Assistant Dean of SITE, Pei Jiansuo, Associate Professor at SITE, and Guo Lin, a youth teacher at SITE.

More than 300 experts from academe, government departments and related areas attended this seminar, including Seiichi Matsuo, President of Nagoya University, Nemoto Jiro, Dean of the School of Economics of Nagoya University, Satoshi Miyamoto, Vice Chairman of IDE-JETRO, Daisuke Hiratsuka, council member of IDE-JETRO, Takeshi Suzuki, President of Kitankai, Zhang Chewei, Dean of the Institute of Population and Labor Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Science, Dai Yande, Deputy Director of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, Li Shantong, researcher at the Development Research Center of the State Council, Professor Hu Angang from Tsinghua University, Professor Li Shi from Beijing Normal University, Professor Klaus Hubacek from the University of Maryland, and Dr Chen Shaohua from the World Bank.

The seminar contained three themes: "China, Japan and the Asian Economy in Great Changes", "Symposium on Low-Carbon Economy and Income Distribution" and "Pan Pacific Input-Output Association Meeting". Professor Xue Jinjun from Nagoya University, who is also the Chairman of Institute of Global Low-Carbon Economy, held the opening ceremony and made an opening address. Researchers from the World Bank, the University of Maryland, and Tsinghua University delivered keynote speeches. On behalf of UIBE, Hong Junjie attended the signing ceremony and signed relevant documents.

As a keynote speaker, Hong Junjie delivered a keynote speech titled "Theories and Policies on the Internationalization of Chinese Enterprises". He said that China’s outbound investment exceeded 100 billion dollars in 2013, and became an international net investor in 2014. With detailed statistics, Hong demonstrated the characteristics of China’s outbound investment from aspects like region and industrial distribution. Especially he made theoretical explanation of the reasons for developing countries making outbound investment from the perspective of political system. By building related theoretical models, Hong made a profound conclusion and a specific analysis of the policies of going abroad in the New Normal.

Ge Ying delivered a keynote speech titled "Regional Tournament, Trade Cost and Corruption: Evidence from China". With elaborate micro tax statistics, he made a research on the relationship among regional protection, trade cost, and corruption, concluding that trade barriers are one of the contributors to the inefficient regional trade. His research provided a new perspective for deepening the integration of domestic market. Guo Lin delivered a speech titled "A Carbon Emission Flying Geese Paradigm in China". Pei Jiansuo delivered a keynote speech titled "Emissions Impact of Outsourcing Slowdown and Trade Reform in China: A Quantitative Estimation", and was invited to attend the Pan Pacific Input-output Association Meeting at Meiji University.

During the seminar, Hong Junjie and Ge Ying discussed further cooperation and reached a broad consensus with representatives from Nagoya University, the University of Maryland, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Development Research Center of the State Council, and Beijing Normal University. This will tighten the academic relationship between SITE and such Japanese institutes as Nagoya University and IDE-JETRO, and give impetus to implement UIBE’s internationalization strategy.
