Interpreter of Queen Elizabeth meets UIBE students
2015-11-04 02:57:00

"Lin Chaolun Face-To-Face Sharing Session" at UIBE was held at 6:30 pm on November 3, 2015. Our famous alumni, Lin Chaolun, came back to school and gave a speech in English, sharing his life experiences with UIBE students. The Lecture Hall of Ning Yuan Building, and the activity center (which acted as the parallel session of the lecture), were both packed and crowded with students to appreciate the elegant demeanor of the royal interpreter of the Queen.

Lin Chaolun, a notable alumni in 1977, the chief Chinese interpreter of Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the "royal" interpreter of the Queen of England and many politicians including prime ministers and speakers, member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, is regarded as a leading Chinese interpreter.

The Party Secretary of UIBE, Wang Ling, and the Vice-President, Yang Changchun, extended warm congratulations and thanks to Lin Chaolun for coming back to UIBE. They had a cordial talk. Wang Ling pointed out that Lin Chaolun came back nearly every year to give voluntary speech and share his experiences with younger students, though UIBE is half a world away from England. His return proves his deep affection for the school. Every student should learn from Lin's dedication and devotion. Wang Ling hoped that, our students could follow his lead and make contributions to the alma mater, and the country.

Vice-President, - Yang Changchun-, addressed in his speech that UIBE is continually striving to become an international institution, the basis of which lies in learning foreign languages. Lin Chaolun sets a good example for us. Yang said humorously the present students were very "in", for they were quite familiar with the experiences and achievements of Lin. He hoped our students could cherish the precious resources at school. Taking Lin Chaolun as an example, students should study hard, keep forging ahead, and strive to become "an international talent with a global horizon, who is familiar with world economic rules and could engage in cross-culture communication and international business, take part in and win the global competition", thus realizing the goals and value of life.

Lin Chaolun gave a detailed introduction of international context and foreign language learning, taking "Self-Introduction – The Significance of Xi Jinping's Visit to U.K. – China's Future Status in the International Development" as the principle line. Lin Chaolun shared his rough English learning path as one of the first English major students after the resumption of university entrance examination in the People’s Republic of China. With passion and insistence, he successfully finished his studies at UIBE, earned a PhD in linguistics from Lancaster University, became the chief Chinese interpreter in Foreign and Commonwealth Office after working at the BBC for seven years, and today, acts as an important "envoy" of the cultural exchanges between China and the U.K. He is also engaged in the training of excellent interpreting talents, making remarkable contributions to the friendly exchanges between China and the U.K., and the interpreting talent training. It is the unremitting efforts that make Lin Chaolun walk out from a small county in Fujian Province to the capital, then to the world, turning misfortunes into fortunes. The present teachers and students were all impressed by his excellent experience with prolonged applause.

As the royal interpreter of the Queen, Lin Chaolun had his own view in terms of the interview. He held that, the reception courtesy towards Chinese leaders was more thoughtful than before, which reflected that China was in the golden age of development with growing exchanges and cooperation with the U.K., and China would play a significant role in the future international community and open up a new prospect in foreign affairs. Speaking of how to embrace the rapidly-developing society, Lin Chaolun pointed out that, graduates today generally do not know much about the company that they are applying to. They study and work aimlessly. Faced with these problems, he said, students should have a long-term view and act with integrity, diligence and grace. He also put forward a piece of pertinent and practicable advice – what needs to be shown in the resume is what you can do for the company, rather than what you want to learn. The global horizon reflected in the speech made students appear lost in thought. Lin Chaolun hoped that students could enhance themselves on the basis of a long-term outlook, and wished everyone could have a splendid future.

In the question-and-answer section, students raised their hands in hope of a close communication with Lin – the Prince Charming in simultaneous interpreting. He answered the questions involving company choice, learning English, the relationship between government and economics and trade, academy and career in detail, sincerely and frankly. He also said, as a UIBE student, he ought to come back to the university no matter where he is. Through sincere words and deep affection, he brought the audience an excellent sharing, pushing the warm atmosphere to a climax.

In the end of the speech, Lin told student, do not let your future prospects and expectations be bound by your present ability and condition. Dare to think and dare to do about the future, though lacking some ability today, because you must be more outstanding in the future.

The session was hosted by the Alumni Association and SIS(School of International Studies), with the assistance of Graduate Student Union. Dean of SIS, Wang Lifei, the Party Branch Secretary of School of Continuing Education, Xia Haiquan, the Deputy Secretary General of Alumni Association, Su Longzhong, the Deputy Party Branch Secretary of SIS, Xu Wenbing, and teachers and students of relevant departments attended the activity. The lecture aroused a great sensation at school, with the Lecture Hall of Ning Yuan Building as the main session, and the activity center as the parallel session. The atmospheres in the two sessions were both hot with some students even standing with no seat. The live broadcast in the parallel session made more students appreciate the lecture, also with a boisterous crowd.

"Lin Chaolun Face-To-Face Sharing Session" not only brought an exceptional experience to all the teachers and students, but also was an example of internationalization of the university environment that UIBE has been actively developing. In many ways, these benefit from our featured talent training mode and the emphasis on English teaching. Lin Chaolun sets a benchmark for students and leads the future talents of the country towards a brighter future.
