On May 6 2015, the Institute of Microelectronics of Chinese Academy of Science held the Symposium on the OBOR Initiative for Young Researchers—a salon under the forum of "Chips and Culture" and invited Professor Wang Zhiming, Director of Research Institute of Globalization and China's Modernization at UIBE, to report on "The Geographical Contexts and General Layout of the OBOR Initiative". Graduate students and early-career researchers from the Institute from the School of Microelectronics at University of Science and Technology of China attended the symposium.

Professor Wang delivered his speech from three aspects. Firstly, he stated that the One Belt One Road (OBOR) Initiative represents a major strategy regard to China's opening-up since China is confronted with geographical challenges from both "high politics" (such as the Asia-Pacific rebalance strategy) and "low politics" (such as TPP and TTIP policies). The OBOR Initiative, together with the policy of Integrating Beijing, Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province, and Expanding Yangtze Economic Zone, also constitutes one of China's policies aiming to promote the spatial pattern of economic development. Secondly, Professor Wang analyzed the strategic design of the OBOR initiative. Based on China's geographical context, the initiative was launched to strengthen regional economic cooperation by functioning as the economic corridor and to completely integrate China's economy with that of Central Asia, South-east Asia, South Asia, West Asia, North Africa, Middle East and Eurasia.

Professor Wang also remarked that the OBOR Initiative is significant in promoting a new model of regional development that features dual driving force of economic expansion since the initiative is beneficial to the development of China as well as other countries along the route. The initiative gives the top priority to the facilities connectivity, concentrates on the production capacity cooperation and encourages Chinese enterprises, advanced equipment in particular to "go global". Thirdly, Professor Wang interpreted the guiding ideas and geographical expansion of OBOR Initiative. The OBOR Initiative is a systematic project, which is launched to build a community of shared interests, destiny and responsibility and should be jointly constructed through consultation. To achieve the major goal of peace, development, cooperation and win-win situations, participants of the Initiative should promote policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and people-to-people bonds. In addition, Professor Wang systematically analyzed several issues respect to the Maritime Silk Road in the 21st Century, like approaches to utilize the Indian Ocean for China's export and the strategic values of the the Arctic Ocean to China.

After the speech, Professor Wang discussed issues of common concern with audiences and explained certain practical questions, including the correlation between Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the OBOR Initiative, the functional relation between Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and Asian Development Bank and the opportunities and challenges in implementing the OBOR Initiative.
