Institute of International Economy



      Institute of International Economy, founded in 1982, is a comprehensive research and teaching institute directly subordinate to the University of International Business and Economics. After 20 years’ development, there has been a well-structured academic echelon formed by researchers with senior, intermediate and primary titles. It has over 30 administrative staff and full-time researchers, of whom two thirds have senior titles and half have attained doctoral degrees. Most of the researchers have specialized knowledge and the capacity to conduct research and bilingual teaching, enjoying high reputation in the academic circle. Some researchers once worked at Chinese embassies and consulates and foreign universities.


The institute follows three principles, namely
(1) To provide services for the development of international business theories;
(2) To provide services for governmental and business policymakers;
(3) To provide services for discipline building.

      The Institute conducts cooperation with governments, businesses, scientific institutes and universities and colleges. The research focuses on three aspects – basic theories, national policies and commercial consultation. The fields of its study include world economy, regional economic cooperation, national economy, international trade, international investment and economy in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Over the past years, the Institute, with its strong scientific capacity and abundant research experiences, has completed many major projects of National Social Science Fund, National Science Foundation, “Ninth Five-year Plan”, “Tenth Five-year Plan”, “Eleventh Five-year Plan”, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, provincial and municipal ministries and governments, international organizations, governments of other countries and domestic and foreign businesses and industrial organizations. The Institute has published a great number of monographs, collective and translative works, academic papers and research reports, attaining recognition from the academia, governments and the society at large and dozens of academic awards granted by national and provincial governments and ministries.


Characteristics of Teaching
      Institute of International Economy has the qualification to award master and doctoral degrees of world economy. It focuses on cultivating graduate students who major in international economic cooperation and regional economic integration, national economy, international investment and transnational business, international agricultural economy, etc. The Institute works hard to form its own characteristics of teaching, and has opened graduate courses like World Economy Research, Research Frontier of International Economics, Theories and Practices of International and Regional Economic Cooperation, China’s Foreign Trade Policy, etc.


Talent Development
      The Institute aims at cultivating versatile talents with independent and critical thinking capacity, research capability and adaptability in the principle of combining theoretical learning and scientific research and promoting the interaction between them. It attaches great importance to the work of cultivating advanced inter-disciplinary talents who have the expertise of world economy and professional knowledge, strategic perspective, innovative thinking, research capability and a good command of foreign languages and those who can conduct research in world economy, teach at higher institutes and engage in foreign trade.

      Meanwhile, the Institute provides overseas internship and study opportunities for graduates and recommends college students to practice at Ministry of Commerce and foreign ventures and launches exchange programs (dual-degree programs), thus enabling graduate students to receive comprehensive training, improve their adaptability and become more competitive in the job-seeking market. Most graduate students from the Institute choose to work at government bodies, large state-owned companies, financial institutions and well-known joint ventures. With the employment rate reaching 100%, all the graduates are able to find satisfying jobs.


Organization of the Institute 
      The Institute has set up the Institute Office, four labs (World Economy Lab, China’s Foreign Business Lab, International Investment Lab and World Agricultural Economy Lab), seven research centers (Sino-Russia/ the Commonwealth of Independent States Research Center, Strategies of International New Energy Research Center, East Asia Economy Research Center, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macaw Economy Research Center, World Production Network and Processing Trade Research Center, China’s Capital Operation Research Center, International Agricultural Cooperation and Development Research Center), and departments for information and data, publication editing and training and exchanges, etc.


Vision of the Institute
      Committed to making its own development a part of that of UIBE, the Institute will establish a first-class domestic research team, build its academic image and comprehensively improve its research capacity and social influence, thus contributing to the leap-forward development of UIBE.
