Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), visited the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) on December 8, 2024.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala toured the Economic and Trade Museum of UIBE, gaining an in-depth insight into the university's significant role in advancing China's opening-up and its notable achievements in foreign trade.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also visited the China Institute for WTO Studies (CIWTO) in UIBE. Prof. Tu Xinquan, WTO Chairholder and Dean of CIWTO, provided an in-depth overview of the institute’s significant accomplishments in the field of international trade in recent years to her excellency.
UIBE President Prof. Zhao Zhongxiu warmly welcomed her excellency and gave a comprehensive introduction to the university's characteristics and research achievements, especially those in the fields of WTO research, digital economy, digital trade and global value chains (GVCs).
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala commended UIBE's achievements and praised CIWTO for its outstanding contributions as a WTO Chair in promoting WTO principles, advancing research on multilateral trade rules, and nurturing talent in the field of international trade.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also met with faculty and student representatives from UIBE, and had a cordial discussion on recent hot issues such as the development of the multilateral trading system, the significance of the accession of developing economies to the WTO, and the impact of artificial intelligence technology on international trade.
WTO Deputy Director-General Zhang Xiangchen, Senior Advisor to the WTO Director-General Tomochika Uyama, and former WTO Deputy Director-General Yi Xiaozhun, also attended the activities.
