Global Forum public lecture held at UIBE
2016-04-07 04:08:00

A public lecture of "Global Forum" was held at Chengxin International Conference Hall from 14:00 to 16:00 on April 6. Liu Yang, the deputy director of Headline Department and also front-page editor, was invited to tell the stories behind news, in an incisive and humorous way.

Firstly, Liu asked, "What is news?" He held that, generally speaking, news is "something new", and producing news means "reporting something new". Presenting what is happening in the world to the readers with a reporter's stroke, logic and language, is their responsibility.

Then Liu asked, "What is respected news?" He said, objectivity and readability are important standards for him to measure good news.

Afterwards, Liu further explained the news viewpoint and value viewpoint of the Global Times, and how to report news events and make efforts to produce meaning news, taking several model cases for examples, including the contradictions on the Korean Peninsula, Donald Trump –– the maverick candidate of the 2016 US presidential campaign –– and the public opinion disputes about South China Sea.

When asked whether the standpoint or fact was put in the first place, Liu believed that every newspaper should have its own standpoint and produce news with attitude. Some headlines of Global Times have reflected its "frank" and "simple" attitude which takes "safeguarding national interest" as the No. 1 value, to name a few, "Clown Trump is no joke", "The United States is too bossy!", and "Confronting China is an inert thought".

From experiencing the complicated border between China and the North Korea along Tumen River, to having a close look at the "political spectrum" after Hong Kong's return to China, Liu's news sensitivity and professional quality as a reporter for many years are manifest in his various interesting experiences. Through sharing the anecdotes in his work, Liu stated, "Experience is fortune for a reporter".

At last, Liu concluded with the quotation from The Interview Notes of Bosnia-Herzegovina Battlefield, written by Hu Xijin, Chief Editor of Global Times, which motivated him to throw himself into journalism. He shared it with students, and hoped that students could be enthusiastic about journalism and never give up their dreams.

After his speech, Liu had some active interactions with students, based on the topics including the concept discrepancies among domestic newspapers, issues of freedom of speechin news media, and so on. With this, the 2016 spring speech tour of Global Times ended successfully.

The activity was organized by the Liaison and Cooperation Department of The Students' Union.
